Literature Text

When she found her pencil doodling swirls and nonsense pictures in the margins for the third time, Autumn sighed and gave up, throwing the offending instrument into the jar on her desk. She stretched her arms above her head and brought them down to ruffle the back of her head, yawning. Papers wouldn’t write themselves, but she couldn’t finish anything tonight.

She wondered if he would invite her to tea again sometime. Or should she? Was there some sort of protocol to this sort of thing?  The memory of his bustling around his kitchen brought a smile to her face and a warmth to the bottom of her chest that she wasn’t unfamiliar with. The change confused her because there was no change to speak of and really, how deeply could you read into tea? Too deeply apparently. She huffed as she arranged the bed and grabbed her night clothes.

The comfortable silence they fell into had been just that – comfortable. There had been something lulling about the domesticity of the scene. She had been surprised when he took off his jacket; he looked different without it. Bonier for one thing, pointed shoulder blades poking through the back of his tucked shirt. More than that though, he looked more accessible, like a barrier had been dropped.

You’re being silly. The nightgown fell to her knees. The pale blue fabric stood out as she bundled herself into the rust colored sheets.

He is really cute though. For an older guy.

Lawrence Bradley resisted the urge to bang his head on the desk. At least a quarter of his students would have failed a basic grammar class.
A direct sequel to Domestic Life, which sets up this scene, and a companion to (A)Musing - Part One, in which the other half of our pair comes to terms with his own attraction.

Other vignettes with these characters.

The thing about the jacket was yet another bit of real life inspiration I took from Dr. Minnick. I have seen him without his jacket precisely once - in the summer, during one of our Drama roleplays. Almost six months later and I'm still trying to write about the sudden perspective shift. It's hard to explain how something that small left such an impression, but I'm trying.
