i.

"I thought I made a mistake once, but I was mistaken."

"You've used that one before."

"I have? Damn."

ii.

"I'm not that fast."

"No you're fast. I'm older, more experienced, SMARTER - and you still beat me in our marathons."

"You're so humble, Doc. Humility is truly your greatest virtue."

"It's true."

iii.

"You can be Data."

"Why do I have to be Data?"

"You don't want to be Data? How about the doctor?"

"No, I don't like blood."

"It's the future. They don't have blood, everything is done by machines."

iv.

"How about the empath?"

"No way."

"What? You don't want to be the empath?"

"NO, that would be terrible!"

"Well, then you're Data."

"Okay. And you are?..."

"I'm the empath."

"Well, you are my part-time counselor."

"I AM the empath!"

"Yeah, you're even getting paid for it."

v.

"I've already heard mine."

"I want to hear it. I want to hear it with you. I want to have that symbiotic moment."

vi.

"You pulled a face like you were in trouble."

"No, I saw an e-mail from the chancellor and thought uh-oh, maybe I'm fired."

"More time to work on your publishing company."

"Now you're starting to think like me. I thought the exact same thing and you just said it. It's starting to scare me."

vii.

Here's a second story to digest over a danish. It's an old one. These are the kinds of pieces I was writing when I was just a little older than you are now.

Now I'm sad because I don't have a danish : (

viii.

"I've been adopted by sheep."

ix

"It's okay, I think I figured out what the problem was."

"What was it?"

"It was a uniquely female problem, Doc. Let's just leave it at that."

x.

"You never hear about women getting heart attacks. It's always old guys."

"You know, it's actually worse for women to get heart attacks. When the EMT guys get there, they don't always take the bra off. And sometimes they have that metal wire in there, so..."

"Man, talk about a uniquely female problem!"

xi.

"See, it’s perfect. You’re my eyes and I’m your ears. Write that down in your book."

xii.

"It's always a good idea to have a few suits."

"Wish I could convince my parents of that."

"YOU want to wear suits?"

"I told you, it sucks being a girl. I don't want to wear dresses. I want to get a nice pinstripe or something."

"Oh man, that would be awesome. You could wear it with one of your hats. You'd be a little Dorothy Parker, going around in your pinstripe suit and your hat, cutting everyone to ribbons with your acumen."

"Well, thanks?"

"You're welcome."
That's a rhetorical question of course - I keep these for my own benefit. Hopefully I'll be able to use them in something larger one day.

i. He can't keep track of everything he tells me, so I hear some things repeatedly.

ii. Humble pie is not his favorite.

iii & iv. He and his wife have been watching Star Trek. I think he's pretty into it. I don't understand most of his references because I've only seen the original, and that was a while ago.

v. Listening to the recording I did of one of our scripts. He sent it to me last night, so we'd both already heard it. It's cute to know he gets something out of the relationship as well.

vi. Perhaps I should stop spending so much time in the English department.

vii. An email exchange; he sent me a story to enjoy over a danish that I didn't have.

viii. I’ll leave the context up to you.

ix. I had a sudden weak spell yesterday while I was out. Told Doc about it. Later, I realized it was probably a hormonal thing.

x. I read that in an article somewhere on Cracked I think. You never see women getting heart attacks on medical shows, and when you do, the bra stays on because you can’t show certain things on television.

xi. He’s read me a few things over the phone, but I take things in better when I read them. So he e-mails them to me, then I call him and we discuss. Meanwhile, I read my newest things to him instead of sending them. We balance out.

xii. I can’t convince them to get me a nice pocketwatch for Christmas either.
