Zero is not a size.

Zero is a lack of size,
a wafer-thin waist
where your organs
should be.

Zero should be the number
of girls that hate
the width of their hips.

But I live in a world
where zero is a size,
and nothing is valued
less
than substance.
Maybe I should have titled this Vanity Sizing for a bit of variety?

Vanity sizing is why it's so hard for me to find comfortable pants :grump:

I really appreciate this. It is exhausting to think about the myriads of stigmas associated with being too large, too small, or corresponding too well with society's view of 'the perfect size.'
Thank you for writing.

How could I not?
I enjoy most of your writing, but I connected particularly well with this piece.
In a few months, I will probably make a post (on a different account) about weight & the values placed on it (mostly my personal view of it + frustrated ranting).
Could I quote part of your poem on there? I can link it back to here. Some of the lines really stand out to me.
"Zero should be the number / of girls that hate / the width of their hips"
"...nothing is valued / less / than substance" (This last phrase makes me think of things other than weight, too)
Knowing me, I will probably write it, but never actually post it. Still, if I can convince myself to write & post it, may I quote you?

Fitting I should stumble upon this now. I was lamenting how bamboozled women are into mutilating themselves to fit moulds and the like while I was cleaning up a job-site today.

I have always despised this nonsense with women chasing perfection. It might be the Hard Lemonade talking, but I have always found a woman's quirks, her unique intricacies and irreplaceable anomalies which make her so undeniably bewitching. This business with rinse-and-repeat Cosmo models is insulting to each and every one of my caveman instincts.

Happy Friday, at any rate! And I hope you've found yourself some comfortable pants.

It's hardly a new sentiment anymore, but I hope I put my own style no the subject :)

All of my pants are comfortable ;) I spend most days wearing pajama pants since I rarely have anywhere to be.

It may not be a new sentiment, but it is not old news either and is still a problem. In my less than humble opinion.

And would that I could wear pyjamas digging ditches in Portland!

Yes, yes, YES.
Women's bodies do not exist on a sliding scale, and size is not golf, with the lowest number winning. Arbitrary numerical sizes are ridiculous, even without the nonsensical existence of a "size 0." Men's clothing makes so much more sense. My waist is X inches, my hips are Y inches, and my inseam is Z inches. Presto. Clothes that actually fit.

I know; I'm so jealous of men's sizing. I have the worst time trying to find pants that A) fit and B) are comfortable. My pant size is anywhere from 18 to 24 depending on the brand. And don't get me started on all the "skinny," "low-fit," "high-rise," "boot cut," and whatever other BS is on the tags.

Gorgeous poem <33

asdfghjkl I happen to be very very tiny
i've gotten innocent comments a lot about it..that in reality hurt
just as you wouldn't call someone fat, you shouldn't call people skinny

Thank you

My parents tried that thing where they fed me nothing but vegetables and thought I would eat it eventually when I was hungry enough; this was when I was seven-ish. When we went to visit my Mimi in Virgina, she didn't recognize me cause I was so skinny :XD:

It's interesting because I could have put "more" there and simultaneously had the same and complete opposite meaning. I agonized over which to use :XD:

It s terrible that we live in a world where everyone has to be a certain size to be considered beautiful :( I mean... Some girls (like me haha) are just naturally built bigger or others are smaller and it s terrible that people feel so bad about who they are cause of how messed up society is >:( oh and AWESOME poem ^^ lol sorry i had to say all of that lol, Elsa Clapping  Awesome poem

I don't think anyone should hate any body type, really. Some people literally can't go above size zero even if they try...

I don't hate any body type; I hate the societal expectation for everyone to meet the exact same standard, even if it's biologically impossible.

I don't get why some girls strive to be a size 0... I am a size 10 or 12 because I'm naturally bigger (Swedish).

Size is a relative concept. I'd like to lose a few jean sizes myself, but I don't need to be in the single digits or anything, not least because I'm just not built to wear those sizes.

My girlfriend is a 00 but hates being thin, she has to wear extra small shirts but she is 5'7". She has trouble finding clothes too. So, she has a very different problem, but a very real one.
