Literature Text

i.

A simple backflip
to tease the audience – now
take a deeper breath.

ii.

A beat of silence;
the audience hanging on.
The clowns know you're there.

iii.

Do not twist that way
before the tall man in black
walking on crutches.

iv.

Look up – but not down.
Let go if you want, but the
net won't save you now.

v.

Youthful insurgents
flip together in perfect
synchronization.

vi.

A railway station.
A goodbye, a torn letter.
The snowfall was never so

cold.
For the latest prompt from #LITplease - four to seven haikus about the circus.

I chose a specific show from a specific type of circus - Cirque Du Soleil has forever ruined "traditional" circus acts for me. Each stanza corresponds to an act from the show Alegria, my personal favorite from the company. (For the record, Alegria is a Spanish word that translates as "joy," but connotates to "joy despite great sorrow.)

i. is the Russian Bars segment.

ii. - one of the clown acts. See around 1:20 here. (This is probably my favorite stanza.)

iii. - The Contortionist

iv. is the High Bar act. The very first Cirque trapeze act I ever saw didn't believe in nets :XD:

v. One of the most original acts, the Powertrack. As if you don't want one of these.

vi. For a show so dependent on inhuman feats, my favorite Cirque act is beautifully, heartbreakingly human.
